Emergencies

Broken braces, loose bands, or protruding wires can cause problems but rarely require emergency treatment. If you care for your braces well, these incidences can be reduced – only a lack of care and attention will result in more than the occasional problem. DON’T FORGET – breakages MAY extend your treatment time!

What happens if…

I have lost a separator?
Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our practice to see if it needs to be replaced.

I have a loose or broken bracket?
Apply a small piece of orthodontic wax to temporarily reattach loose brackets or place wax over the bracket to provide a cushion between the bracket and your gums and other soft tissues of your mouth. Please call our office to let us know that it has happened and our staff will advise you how best to manage this.

I have a loose band?
These will need to be replaced or recemented into place. Save the band and schedule an appointment for the repair.

The wire is irritating me?
Apply a small amount of orthodontic wax over the protruding end. Do not attempt to cut the wire because you might accidentally swallow it or inhale it into your lungs. Please call our office to let us know that it has happened and our staff will advise you how best to manage this. If a mouth sore develops from the wire poking the inside of your mouth, rinse your mouth with warm salt water or an antiseptic rinse. An over-the-counter dental anesthetic can also be applied to numb the area.

I have sore teeth?
After braces have been put on, it is usual for teeth to be sore for up to 24 hours. This initial discomfort may even last 3 to 4 days. Panadol will help to relieve this discomfort. A soft diet is also recommended. Stay away from anti-inflammatory drugs as these may slow down the rate of movement of your teeth.

You may experience some looseness of your teeth as a result of tooth movement. DO NOT PANIC, as this is a normal reaction.

I have sore lips and cheeks?
During the first few weeks of treatment, your lips and cheeks may become sore. If it is troubling you, place your Orthodontic wax on the offending bracket. If you are out of wax, please speak with one of our friendly team. They will be delighted to assist you.

I have lost my appliance?
If your plate or retainer has been lost or broken it is essential to contact us immediately. We will then be able to organise the repair or replacement for you.

I have other emergencies?
If you experience any other type of emergency or trauma to your teeth and appliances, please call our practice as soon as possible during business hours. Please do not come directly to the practice – by calling us, you will allow us to create a time to specifically see you.
